The location is unique: close to the Central Station, the RLD and the Nieuwendijk & Kalverstraat shopping streets. The front is an excellent people watching spot with the commuters, the trams and tourists passing by. At the back at the Vermeer restaurant you can board a salon boat. A hotel easily accessible to the Centrum of Amsterdam and the train station (link to Schiphol airport). From the main train station of Amsterdam, the hotel is less then 2-3 mins walk, across the road, making this an ideal location for those who need fast and easy access into the city. The hotel is also right near the red light district (Amsterdams red light district is not "scummy" IMO) and several bars and restaurants. Access to the subway is also near-by. The hotel itself has a nice lobby, the rooms simple but spacious. The washrooms are nice as well with a good shower for those groggy mornings. The price I payed for the room was insanely high, but booked at the last minute (199 euros!).

I chose this hotel online and had just found VT - so had no clue what I was doing. I did well! This hotel is beautiful, and even though I got a discounted room, with no view I might add, the room was a decent size and of wonderful quality. The linens were heavenly too ;) Two grown women traveling to Europe for the first time, with waaay too much luggage, and there was still plenty of room! I have to say the staff was wonderful -definitely customer service professionals. We arrived about 7 hours before check in, hoping to leave our luggage at the desk and begin touring, and we were allowed to actually check in at that time! Every employee of the hotel was friendly, helpful and kind ... a great start to our travels abroad.

Unique Qualities:
The location was perfect. It's across a canal and a road from Centraal Station. A short walk from Red Light, adjacent to Damraak, and a jaunt away from Dam Square. For being clueless, I was so very pleased with everything about this hotel's presentation, location, and service.

Description:
Great 5-star hotel. Got a good price on it in August 2003 - $112 per double room(2 people). Room was on the first floor, windows were right on the small canal and a tiny back alley, not bad.

Unique Qualities:
I think it has a bar and a restaurant, bunch of conference rooms and gym. Don't remember if there was a pool.

I stayed at the Barbizon Palace on a last minute stop in Amsterdam and found a discounted rate on www.hotel-booker.com (about $125 US). This is a very luxurious property in a less than optimal location. Just a couple of blocks from Centraal Station, and a stone's throw away from the notorious Red Light District, the very big hotel is part of a Dutch chain. The common areas are extremely luxurious. Your key card is required to operate the elevator.

We had a great deal from Hotel Connect and had paid for an upgrade. The room was large, very clean and well decorated. It had exposed beams and was not a usual identikit room. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The bathroom was modern and everything worked well. We missed not having breakfast included. We did not eat at the hotel. It is situated opposite the Train Station. If you travel by air the links into town are superb, so this hotel being adjacent to the station, made things easy.

This is a large (270 rooms) hotel in a well-known chain, and if you book a room here you know what you'll get: a very pleasant, but rather impersonal, hotel. Nice rooms with the all the usual amenities - including safe, minibar, coffee & tea making facilities - and the possibility of wireless internet access. The location is very good, near the central train station - walking distance to most main tourist attractions. The staff was very helpful and serviceminded. Tried the room service, and were very happy with our meal!

The Barbizon Hotel was the Hotel of the Tangomagia festival not only for sleeping (where you could get special tango-friendly prices), but also for dancing in the Tangocafe: each day during the festival between 16.00- 20.00, except December 31. Dancing there was really nice because all the (international) people staying for the whole festival came there and it was a bit more easier there (than in the big rooms of the evening balls) to get in contact with dancers ;-) Sleeping there was also a great experience! A very comfortable bed and a wonderful luxe-bathroom!!!! There was in the room a very interesting book about Amsterdam with infos and stories about the haven, the Jordaan-neighborhood, the history of the city....very interesting!!! I spent two hours to read this book and then I went to visit the Jordaan to see it in real!!!
